Diane’s Story

I am Diane Head, née Walker.  I went to Stag Lane Junior school in Edgware before I went to DGS.  Quite a few from Stag Lane went to DGS from my year:  Lindsey Collins, David Wright, Stephen Nixson, Michael Wilson, Maurice Gatfield, Graham (John) Shenton, Stephen Roberts and Stephen Gillam from my class alone.  There were more from my year at Stag Lane including: Lesley Steer and Lynn Simpson.  There could well have been others.  Quite a haul from one class…all due to our form master Mr Grey.  A great teacher.  I don’t think they make them like that anymore.  Stag Lane was a very good school - producing lots of students for grammar schools.

I had quite an uneventful time at DGS, although I did play netball and hockey for the school.  I got 7 out of 8 GCEs, but by the end of lower VI I’d had enough.  I left DGS in September 1967 and went to work at the Land Registry in Harrow.  I wanted to go in the plans department because I enjoyed geography, but I was put in the legal side because I happened to gain an A grade in English Language GCE.

There I also played in the mixed hockey team, which included former DGS pupils Kathy Clarke and Pauline Fidler who were in the year above me.  I also came across several other girls I had known at Stag Lane.

I went on day release from the Registry to finish my A levels.  I was successful in both Geography and English, but I must give thanks for the grounding I got during the lower VI to the staff at DGS especially Mr M Williams.  (I never knew his name was Merlin!)

I also met my husband at the Harrow office.  We had several house moves over the years to Sussex and near Cambridge.  After our daughter was settled in her senior school, I returned to the Civil Service to the dreaded HMRC!

I went to the 2013 reunion, where I met up with Brenda Fuller and Linda Baker.  I still keep in touch with Brenda Fuller.  My sister, Jean Walker who was 2 years below me, also went.  She was in the same form as Tony Bradshaw.  Sorry to say, that the cliques that were there back in the ‘60s were still there at the reunion!

I eventually retired from HMRC and 2 years ago moved back to Middleton on Sea from where we had moved in 1980.  We managed to buy a house in the same road that we had lived in back in the 1970s.

If you remember Diane or would just like to chat to her, she'd be delighted to hear from you… just "Contact Me".
