1952-57 Class Year Correspondence

In the original thread, some contributors seemed blissfully ignorant of the use of punctuation.  Perhaps english punctuation wasn't on the girl's curriculum at Downer in the early '50s.

In order for the text to make some sort of sense, an attempt has been made to punctuate it according to the author's inferred intent - possibly erroneously.

Jennifer, this is Jeff Stilton 1953-58, one year behind you.  I recall John Baldry having a sort of fan club, a taller auburn-haired girl and a shorter dark-haired lady.  Were you one of them?  There are no other members of my class registered (probably warned-off as we can probably lay claim to being the least disciplined and worst academic of any student body).  Ah, those were the good old days.

Hey, at last someone remembers us.  Actually, we weren't a fan club.  I was going out with John at that time (I was the short fat dark one) and the taller red head was my buddy Pat Dollery.  Don't give up on someone contacting you from your year as just today, someone has contacted me - but through 'www.friendsreunited.co.uk'.  Unfortuneately, I don't yet recognise the names but I've asked for more detail to jog my memory.

Jennifer - I was in the 1951 class (the very first).  Was Mickey Goodall your brother?  If so, I'd like to get in touch with him.

Coral (Norton) admits to being in the first year (1951).  Actually 1950 - 1955/57 was the first year for the school when they were housed at Blackwell Secondary Modern School.  My year (1951 - 1956/58) were also housed at Blackwell for a year before moving to Downer. Blackwell Secondary Modern School is now called Hatch End High School (where I sometimes play table tennis in the Wembley & Harrow Table tennis League).  I am still in touch with one other pupil from that year - David Rumens, an English Chess International.  I am also still in touch with Trevor Ball (1950 - 1955/57).  I can still remember many of those who were at school in my year so I am willing to start off a list for 1951-1956/58.

You caught me!  I must have been in the 1950 class (see - I'm now 65, and everybody knows your memory goes then!!) because we were the first students and we were in Blackwell.  Other names I remember from that year: Pearl Morgan, Francis Mallett, Mickey Goodall, Jimmy Room, Alfie Davie (now passed on, I believe), Keith Crate (I'm in touch with him), Beryl Jacobs, Esme Hicks, Pat Harvey, and I THINK I remember Trevor Ball.  Add my name to your list - I had hoped the reunion would be in September/October.  June is out of the question for me - I live in western Canada.

1950 lot.  Coral you are quite right we were lodgers at Blackwell I had the most awful journey from Elstree.  As well as class members mentioned, Pat Harvey, Jennifer Cade, Alan Ball, who are registered with the school site, I recall Alan Gilbert (Gilly), Tony Adams, Barry Steele, David Poole, Len Goldstone, Olive Moule, June Moore, who was Head Girl, Enid Curruthers who visited me when I was working at Guys I last saw Pearl Morgan when she was visiting her father at Edgware General and I was coming out of the midwifery unit.

Can't believe we are all 65 still as daft as ever I was in spite of a career in nursing and education.  I'm still working with my consultancy when and where I like.  I'm married, live in Cheshire, have a scattered family with 9 grandchildren.  Also can't make June - we will have to do our own thing.

Coral,

I'm afraid I do not remember you, although we were obviosly contemporaries. The group that I moved in while we were still at Blackwell for two years and later in Edgware included, John Dent; Michael Monks; Arnold France; Brian Caudle; Alan Boyce; Barry Rice; Bryce Gibson; Ted Wlodarczyk; Roderick Bowman; others included Peter Martin; Brian Quigley; Tony Wilmot; Brian Hill; John Freind; for the girls it included Wendy Grisholm; Beryl Woodruffe; Christine Baskerville, Dianne Towers; Barbara Aldiss; Ann Peck; Daphne Ranger; that I can remember off the top of my head.  I will search my photos and memory for others and pass them along.

Somewhere I have a large collection of photos taken close to Paris, in the village of Taverny, Seine et Oise, when Mrs White, the french teacher, took some 20-30 students on a student exchange in 1954.  (The year of the general strike in France).  It was exciting to say the least!  We travelled back to Boulogne in a market truck as there were no trains or buses operating.

I migrated to Canada in 1964 (Toronto, then Deep River [on the Ottowa] then back to Toronto) before migrating down to San Francisco, California where I have now lived - on a temporay visa since 1993.  I have three girls.  One in Austin, TX; One in Toronto, Ontario; and another in Elmvale (N. Ontario).  Each has two children.  Where abouts in Western Canada are you?

Incedently, I used to have to scold Colin Baldrey - who was a frequent member of the late group that I looked after as a prefect, prior to and during assembly.  Even then he said he was going to be a famous pop singer and no one believed him.  Persistence can certainly pay off.

regards Anton Tyler

John Baldry of course... He was at the 2002 re-union -- take a look at the photos.  I know Deep River and Elmvale incidentally...

I was in the same class as Coral Norton and I remember most of the others that you mention.  I think I must have been their form prefect and looked after them during staff meetings Alan Taylers )Emglish)teacher

I remember one assembly at Blaackwell when the head told Brian Quigley to stand up and we misheard him and we all stood up lord knows what he had done we were all in stitches afterwards.

Many thanks for replying Jennifer.

I am glad to hear that Mickey is OK and has left the rat race.  I too have retired, ----- to a village in Shropshire to play golf and drink beer mainly.  I have been married twice and my present lady wife and I have two daughters, one who is still in Uni and one who has just finished Uni.  When I came ashore from a seafaring life in 1964 I had various jobs until I settled with a big American manufacturing company from which I retired as a European director.  It was the best move I ever made behind that of marrying Kay my second wife!

I am sorry that I missed seeing Mickey at the recent reunion as I did not know about it until afterwards.  I did in fact see him in a pub back about 30 years ago!  I gave him my tel no but I did not hear from him.

If you have a moment perhaps you could give Mickey my best regards? I have very pleasant memories of times on the football pitch when we were at school together. (and other things as well)!

Thanks again.
Peter

Fran,

I guess we were both prefects at that time.  I wonder do you remember Marion Capell?  I thought she was a close freind of Wendy Gristwood, but I am not sure.  She is asking anyone who remembers her to send her an e-mail.  I remember the 'Marion' who was Wendy's close freind but I thought that she left after the fifth form.  The Marion Capell says she left in 57 which was when we left from the upper 6th.  Also, do you now what happened to Rose Stein?  I think she was a close freind of Beryl Woodruffe and Nina Watts.

Hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you the best in 2004.

regards, Anton Tyler
