Sewer pipes, about 6 feet in diameter, were laid horizontally - with wooden duck boards to walk on - joined together and sunk about three feet into the ground and then covered with earth. If you were tall you had to watch your head.
One thing I remember was going to school during air-raids. The rule was that if you were more than halfway to school carry on to school - if not go back home. We never went home but made for Woodcock Park until one time a flying bomb landed on a bungalow behind the shops where Woodcock Hill meets Kenton Road opposite Kenton lane - I think it is called Woodgrange Avenue? After this we obeyed the rules.
